Bumpy’s Polar Freeze celebrated its grand opening at 2013 State Street, Schenectady with a ribbon cutting hosted by The Chamber of Schenectady County on May 9, 2013. The ribbon cutting was sponsored by McNamee, Lochner, Titus & Williams, PC.
In July 2007, Dave and Libby Elmendorf were enjoying their first date over ice cream. Five years later, they were married, and a few short months later, they owned that same ice cream store, Bumpy’s Polar Freeze.
A well-known local destination for food, ice cream and family fun, Bumpy’s still required some updating. The eight bumper boats, which are a big summer draw for local kids, needed work, and their pool needed significant cleaning as well as a new filtration system. The Elmendorfs upgraded the shop’s electrical system and enabled it for Wi-Fi. They also installed a rock-climbing wall which is also available for parties and fundraising events under the name Capital District Mobile Rock Wall.
Bumpy’s features 101 different soft serve flavors, a wide variety of hard ice cream and great food. Whether you want an ice cream cone, a cheeseburger or a memorable birthday party, Bumpy’s has something for everyone.
David and Libby believe their business is a worthwhile investment in Schenectady, where they were both born and raised. They are also encouraged by the resurgence of new businesses opening locally, such as the Wal-mart Neighborhood Market and the businesses in Mohawk Commons and Mansion Square. The rebirth of downtown Schenectady is also heartening.
Bumpy’s is open in the spring Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 9 p.m. Their summer hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 10 p.m.
